Madrid, 7 March 2016.- The Mutua Madrid Open and Ecovidrio, the non-profit organisation responsible for managing glass recycling in Spain, has reached an agreement to make the tournament, which takes place from 29 April to 8 May, the most sustainable competition on tour.
Manolo Santana – Director of the Mutua Madrid Open, Gerard Tsobanian – President and CEO of the Mutua Madrid Open and Borja Martiarena – Ecovidrio’s Director of Marketing, have signed an agreement by means of which the two entities undertake to promote glass recycling during the tournament, encouraging fans and society in general to join the cause to protect the environment.
Tennis and recycling take to the streets
Citizens of Madrid will also be able to experience the passion of the sport and the recycling of glass on the streets thanks to the numerous tennis-ball-shaped containers that are to be installed at emblematic sites across the capital and have a very special purpose: the trophy for the singles runners-up and the champions of the doubles at the Mutua Madrid Open will be made from glass recycled by the citizens. In addition, Ecovidrio will be selling containers for domestic use that are customized with the tournament’s motifs; these will be available at the official store in the Caja Mágica.
Every single glass container will be recycled
Thanks to this agreement, the Mutua Madrid Open and Ecovidrio undertake to recycle 100% of the glass used during the competition, during which players, personnel, catering and fans will join forces to achieve the goal. In addition, for the first time, containers will be placed around the tournament facilities and on the tennis courts next to the players’ chairs, which will remind spectators of the importance of recycling. There will also be messages to raise awareness on the main screens on the courts.
Mutua Madrid Open Director Manolo Santana was very happy about this collaboration: “Our tournament is a world leader and now we want to be the Masters 1000 that is most involved with the challenge of recycling”. The Mutua Madrid Open, which attracts more than 200,000 people each year and is televised in more than 180 countries, has become one of the most important national events and it is, in the words of Borja Martiarena, “the ideal platform for millions of people to learn about the benefits of recycling glass in the green container”.
