Simona Halep and Grigor Dimitrov have added their names to those of Garbiñe Muguruza, Kei Nishikori, Maria Sharapova and Feliciano López for the tournament on May 4
Last week Garbiñe Muguruza announced she would take part in the Tie Break Tens tournament in Madrid and today two other tennis stars also confirmed their participation: Simona Halep and Grigor Dimitrov.
Halep is the current world number four and defending champion at the Mutua Madrid Open after defeating Dominika Cibulkova in the 2016. She also reached the final of the French Open in 2014, where she was beaten by Maria Sharapova, one of the first players to sign up for Tie Break Tens in Madrid. This will represent the Romanian player’s first experience of the new tournament and its fan-friendly format. Halep, who has won 14 WTA titles during her career, is looking forward to trying her hand at the shorter version in what promises to be an exciting contest in the Caja Mágica. “Tie-breaks are always tense and with such quality players involved in the Tie Break Tens, I think we’re in for a great night of tennis in Madrid,” she said.
The presence of Grigor Dimitrov is also good news for the tournament. The Bulgarian’s form in 2017 will add another layer of interest to the event after his excellent results on the Tour. Dimitrov will come into the Tie Break Tens Madrid with two titles – Sofia and Brisbane – under his belt already this season and a semi-final run at the Australian Open where he lost a tight match against Rafa Nadal in five sets. Dimitrov broke into the top eight in 2014 and is currently on track to better his highest career ranking: at the age of 25, he is ranked 13 and has been making great strides to rise even higher on the back of some excellent results this year. “I love playing tie-breaks. You are under pressure from the very first point and it brings out the best in people. The crowd are guaranteed excitement so it should be a great atmosphere”, said Grigor.
