With under a week to go until the fifteenth anniversary of the Mutua Madrid Open kicks off, the tournament organisers have made known four more invitees to add to those previously announced: Pablo Carreño, Nicolás Almagro and Juan Mónaco in the ATP tournament and Lourdes Domínguez in the WTA, will have the chance to play in the main draw of the tournament, which starts on 29 April in the Caja Mágica.

Having already awarded Fernando Verdasco, Lara Arruabarrena, Sara Sorribes and Paula Badosa with wild cards, the Mutua Madrid Open wanted to recognise the form of Nicolás Almagro and help him play in the tournament’s main draw. The player from Murcia is currently number 71 in the world, his best performance in Madrid came when he reached the semi-final, where he lost an intense clash to Rafael Nadal. In 2016, Almagro will again have the chance to compete against the world’s best in the Caja Mágica.

In addition, as they continue to support young talent, the organisers have granted an invitation to Carreño (ranked number 50). At 24 years of age, the player from Gijon is one of the greatest hopes for the future of the Spanish Armada. The news means Carreño will also enjoy a chance to play in the final stage of the year’s third Masters 1000.

Also, the Mutua Madrid Open has decided to give the last invitation to the men’s draw to Juan Mónaco. The Argentinian, who had a difficult 2015 because of injuries, is one of the fan favourites because of his self-professed love of Spain, where he has a large number of friends, among them Rafael Nadal.

Lourdes Domínguez has also received a wild card for the main draw. The Spaniard, who is nearing the end of her career, joins Arruabarrena, Sorribes and Badosa in the Caja Mágica’s Premier Mandatory on clay, as the tournament continues to support home-grown talent.

Finally, Sorana Cirstea, who is back on court after an injury, was also given a wild card for the WTA main draw.

The Mutua Madrid Open will announce the remaining invitations for the main draw in the coming days.
